Umduduzi – Hospice Care for Children
Umduduzi was founded in December 2012 by Dr Julia Ambler & Ms Tracey Brand. Both had been providing children’s palliative care services to the State sector within KwaZulu-Natal between 2008 and 2012 through their work with The Bigshoes Foundation’s Durban office. When The Bigshoes Foundation was dissolved nationally Julia & Tracey felt it was imperative to continue the work that had been started.
Together with a team of committed Board Members, Umduduzi was founded and children living with life-limiting or life-threatening illnesses have the opportunity to be cared for by a dedicated team of specialists.
With a small, committed team Umduduzi provides the following children’s pallaitive care services within the greater Durban area:
- Advice on the control of pain and other symptoms
- Teaching & training of health care professionals
- Compassionate care for children with life-threatening or life-limiting conditions
- Counselling for children and families
- Age-appropriate HIV disclosure counselling
- Home visits and assessments
- Support through bereavement
- A step-down facility at Clairwood Hospital in Umbilo
- Provides playrooms and play coordinators at Clairwood Hospital and King Dinuzulu Hospital in Durban
- A monthly palliative care clinic at the new KwaZulu-Natal Children’s Hospital
Umduduzi treats children as people, not just as patients, and seeks to ensure that children with life-threatening or life-limiting conditions receive the best possible care and comfort.
